Meet the extended family
There were already seven superb versions of the sixth-generation Ford Explorer for buyers to choose from, which started with the extremely attractively priced base Explorer and then went up through XLT, Limited, Timberline, ST, King Ranch and finally to the top-of-the-range Platinum model. That lineup already included an unusually wide and versatile range of different models that delivered style, luxury, performance and even the most off-road-ready Explorer ever in the shape of the Timberline. However, with the performance-focused ST variant accounting for close to one in five of all Explorer sales, Ford has decided to give buyers more of what they want by adding a rear-drive version of the Explorer ST and a new Explorer ST-Line the delivers performance-inspired appearance and technology and bold styling of the ST for those who don't want or need the ultimate in Explorer ST performance. Engines and performance
Although the standard engine for the 2022 Ford Explorer is "only" a four-cylinder unit, this impressive 2.3-liter EcoBoost powerplant puts out a pretty mighty 300 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque that puts much of the competition to shame, and gets sent to the rear or all four wheels through Ford's superb ten-speed automatic transmission. If that's not enough for you there's also a 3.0-liter turbo V-6 which then provides the Explorer with 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. Also available are hybrid versions of the Limited and Platinum trim levels, and these feature a 3.3-liter V-6 gas engine paired with an electric motor and hybrid batteries the provide the Ford midsize SUV with a combined 318 horsepower and 322 lb.-ft. of torque. That's still an impressive amount of power and performance, but in standard rear-wheel-drive form, it helps the Explorer deliver an EPA-rated 28 mpg combined fuel economy rating and 25 mpg combined if you opt for the extra capability of all-wheel-drive.
Features and equipment
Even the entry-level Explorer models come pretty well equipped with standard 18-inch alloy wheels, plenty of active safety tech, seating for up to seven people across three rows, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The majority of buyers opt for the XLT trim that's just above the base model and adds the likes of heated front seats and second-row captain's chairs as part of the standard equipment, but it's the increased number of available options for upgrading the Explorer that start at XLT level that make this one such a popular choice. Without going for a higher trim level that may mean paying for some additional features you might not require, a factory order for the XLT can include the likes of a twin-panel moonroof, remote start, ActiveX seating material, and a Ford SYNC infotainment system with integrated voice-activated navigation.
